By far, the most popular engine choice in the C-Class is the 2.0-litre diesel, badged as a C 220 d. It offers brisk acceleration - 0 to 62 mph takes just 6.9 seconds - while returning around 50mpg on average.
You can up the ante further by going for the C 300 d, which, with an extra 50bhp, lops a full second off the 0 to 62 mph time with only a small penalty in terms of fuel economy.
C 200 petrol models are also widely available as used cars. These are cheaper to buy, but are slower and worse on fuel than the diesels.
With this generation of C-Class, there's also a myriad of hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, which employ the assistance of electric motors and battery packs to reduce fuel consumption.

The coupé and convertible suffer in terms of cargo capacity due to their sleeker bodystyles, but even those models can seat two adults and two children in relative comfort. The back seats are pretty roomy in saloon and estate models, with good head and legroom for rear passengers.
Diesel versions are extraordinarily efficient on the motorway, keeping fuel expenditure down. Road tax prices depend on the year it was first registered, so check before you buy.
