Used Mercedes-Benz G-Class Exterior, Driving, Side

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (also known as the G-Wagen) is an iconic 4x4 SUV that is well known for being one of the most capable off-road machines that you can walk into a car dealership and buy.

The looks have remained relatively unchanged for this second generation model, maintaining the distinctive G-Class shape, albeit with many modern refinements. It's been on sale in the UK since 2018. Reasons to buy a used G-Class include:

  • Distinctive styling
  • Mercedes-Benz cool factor
  • Luxurious interior
  • Great technology
  • Excellent off-road capability and practicality

Engines and Driving Experience

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Off Road

When looking for a used G-Class of this era, you'll notice that there are three engine choices available:

  • G 350d
  • G 400d
  • G 63 AMG

75% of the G-Class models available on the used market are petrol-powered G 63 AMG versions, with their thunderous 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engines the most readily available. These are fast and fun to drive, but are pretty thirsty in terms of fuel economy.

Diesel variants include the 282bhp G 350d, which has since been replaced by the more powerful G 400d. This produces a healthy 325bhp and 516lb ft of torque, making it a seriously good vehicle for towing. Expected fuel economy for these models is around 20-25mpg, compared to 15-18mpg for the petrol versions.

An advanced all-wheel drive system, ladder frame chassis and trio of locking differentials mean the G-Class is one of the most capable off-roaders you can buy.

Practicality and Running Costs

From a capability and space standpoint, the G-Class is a very practical vehicle. It's a 5-seat only model, but there's shedloads of headroom and legroom is very decent as well. Because the G-Class is quite wide, it's easy to get three adults in the back.

The old school boxy design has other benefits too, like excellent visibility through the big windows and a decent-sized boot, which is accessed by opening a side-hinged tailgate. Actual cargo space is rated at a fairly sizeable 667 litres, but is less than both a Range Rover (909 litres) and Porsche Cayenne (741 litres).

Expected fuel economy of around 20mpg, all models being in the highest insurance group and pricey replacement parts mean G-Class running costs are higher than most cars, which is to be expected for a vehicle of this nature. Stratstone Mercedes-Benz retailers are the best people to look after your G-Class.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

The interior is definitely the main area where you can tell the difference between the current and previous generation G-Class. All the materials are much nicer with quilted leather seat coverings and door panels, metallic buttons and brushed aluminium trim pieces.

It doesn't get the latest MBUX infotainment system as featured on the GLS, but Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both present. Sat nav is of course standard on all models, as well as DAB radio and twin 12.3-inch screens which house the digital instrument cluster and infotainment.

When crash tested, the G-Class was rated as a five-star car by Euro NCAP, which is the maximum score. Safety tech includes:

  • Driver, passenger, side and window airbags
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Traffic sign & speed limit recognition

Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class right for me?

The G-Class provides an iconic image like no other SUV. Its distinctive styling sets it apart on the road, and stands out wherever it goes. It can go anywhere too, with excellent off-road capability and clever features that help you tackle the rough stuff. Revised suspension and interior materials mean it's now more comfortable on-road as well.

There's no shortage of luxury SUVs to choose from, although few will be as competent off-road as the G-Class. The Land Rover Range Rover and Defender are good options, while the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X7 are worth a look, too.
